KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

HISTORY AND HERITAGE

The Knights of Columbus was established in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, who was Assistant Pastor of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, CT, along with a group of parishioners. Their intent was to bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families. He was beatified in 2020 and is now referred to as Blesses Michael McGivney. He is currently being considered for canonization into sainthood.

OUR FAITH

The goal of of the Knights of Columbus is to help men, their families and their parishes grow closer to Christ. We provide opportunities to live and spread the Catholic faith via numerous programs and resources.

4 PRINCIPLES

All the good works we do are based on four core principles:

CHARITY (1st DEGREE) – Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Knights are compelled to action through our global mission and our faith in God. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by answering the call daily of showing  love for our neighbors in a variety of ways:  conducting food and clothing drives;  donating  food to local food pantries; providing scholarships; funding charitable organizations; supporting local parishes; and more.
Visit the Charitable Activities page for details of the many efforts supported by the Masconomo Council 1232.

UNITY (2nd DEGREE) – Knights know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could on our own. This also means that we can count on the support and encouragement our Brother Knights as we work to enhance the lives of those  in our parish and community.

FRATERNITY (3rd DEGREE) – Individual Knights gave more than 75 million service hours in 2017, illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy.

PATRIOTISM (4th DEGREE) – Members of the Knights of Columbus, no matter their origins, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and Country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether publicly or privately, the Knights remind the world that Catholics are some of their greatest citizens and that they support their nations.

FAITH IN ACTION - 4 PILLARS

The Eucharistic Prayer during Mass reminds us: “It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to giv you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Chris, our Lord.” It is also the duty and slavation of Knights to afhere ot the 4 Pillars:

FAITH – Strengthen our men and their families in the Catholic faith. We want to create authentic connections with a loving God and his Son, Jesus Christ.

FAMILY – Promote the bonds of family. Society should value a family that is faithful to God and to one another.

COMMUNITY – Called to service. Our first principle is Charity, whether at home with our families or out in our communities.

LIFE – Respect for the dignity of life. This demands a commitment to human rights across a broad spectrum, both from the standpoints of being Knights and as followers of Christ.
